The Yorkshire 3 Peaks

The Challenge: To complete the circular walk of the Yorkshire 3 peaks (Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough) in 12 hours.
Distance: 38km (23miles)

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge is set in some of the best scenery the Yorkshire Dales has to offer. The 23 miles in 12 hours is achievable for most but is by no means a push over.  This is an absolute classic mountain challenge.

You can take part in this challenge with a team of friends or colleagues on a date that suits you . We can also put on large multi-team events for bigger work places and charities.

If you have a team through your work or other social group we can run this event just for you by either accompanying your teams around the route or by simply meeting them at check points along the way. Groups of under 18’s (school groups for example) will need to be accompanied by us on this event.

The Accompanied Event

Each team is guided by a Mountain Leader who will guide you round the course as well as be on hand to deal with any incidents that should arise. Our support vehicle will meet up with you at various points with refreshments.

The cost of the event will depend on how many people you get to join in. The prices below cover Mountain Leader cover and a support vehicle. If you have low numbers (less than about 15 people) and are able to provide your own support vehicle then we will be able to reduce the cost, just ask for a bespoke quote.

The Unaccompanied (Checkpointed) Event

If you are confident in your navigating skills (the route is quite straightforward for those with the appropriate skills and experience) you may opt to go out in your own teams with our role being to run checkpoints and respond to any incidents. We would meet you at various points on the route and provide refreshments at vehicle checkpoints. Again we can provide other services if required but the basic costs of running the Yorkshire 3 Peaks as a checkpointed event are the same as the accompanied event. The difference is that you have a higher level of independence, for example you can sort yourselves out in to smaller teams to enable you to move faster to get a good time.

The Route in a Nutshell

The route starts in the village of Horton-In-Ribblesdale and follows paths and minor roads for a short while before beginning the climb to the first peak, Pen-y-ghent (694m). This is followed by its gradual descent, and then a few undulating miles to High Birkwith where you will meet the the first vehicle for refreshments.

There follows a straightforward section which takes you to the foot of Whernside, near the famous Ribblehead viaduct (pictured), and the second stop at the vehicle for refreshments. From here it is a long but straightforward climb to the summit of Whernside (736m) and then a shorter, steeper descent to the third vehicle check point at Chapel-Le-Dale.

The route now crosses the road and takes a footpath through limestone pavements, where, if you have the mental energy you may appreciate the beauty and importance of this unique habitat, before the path steepens as you climb the final mountain, Ingleborough (723m). From here it is a long, scenic, and for some at least, enjoyable, walk back down to Horton.

The Three Peaks Code of Conduct.

The popularity of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks route causes a certain amount of disruption to the residents of Horton-in-Ribblesdale and environmental damage to the route itself. The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and Horton-in-Ribblesdale Parish Council have drawn up a Three Peaks Code of Conduct that should be followed. Lupine Adventure Co-op are a corporate friend of the 3 peaks. Everyone taking part in a Lupine Adventure run event will receive a Yorkshire 3 Peaks medal to recognise their achievement (but don’t tell your participants as it is often a nice surprise).
