DofE Expeditions for Schools & Youth Groups

We can assist in running your expeditions … or take them off your hands completely

As an Approved Activity Provider (AAP) for the expedition section of the DofE we are licensed to run all aspects of the expedition section.

Although based in the North of England we run, and help out with, training days and expeditions throughout the country.  We even run international DofE expeditions in Europe. Wherever you are based in the UK we can probably help.

We can:

  • Organise entire programmes of training, practice and qualifying expeditions.
  • Organise the expeditions for groups that you have trained.
  • Provide a team of supervisors to supervise expeditions where you have trained the groups and planned the expedition.
  • Provide a few supervisors to work alongside your staff and under your direction.

In the first 3 examples shown above, Lupine Adventure are taking responsibility for the safety of the participants. In the fourth example we are operating under your direction, and so responsibility for the safe and successful running of the programme ultimately rests with your organisation.

Do you have any staff who hold nationally recognised outdoor qualifications (e.g. BEL, ML, WGL, HML), or who have completed the training in these awards? If so then we may be able to bring your staff into our team of instructors and reduce the number of staff that we need to hire.

Training

We can run a full training course or simply cover the bits that you require help with.

For Bronze and Silver programmes we tend to run single day training session on your premesis. For Gold expeditions we usually run training on a 2 day residential here in Yorkshire. However, with some schools we run a day of training at school and a day before the practice expedition in the countryside.

Practice and Qualifying Expeditions

Ratios

We staff all practice expeditions at a ratio of 1 member of staff per group to ensure they they get the attention they need to learn the skills. On all assessed expeditions in remote terrain we keep the 1:1 ratio as we feel it is essential to keep groups safe. In non-remote terrain we will sometimes lower the ratio to 2 staff per 3 groups on assessed expeditions.

Remote Supervision

During practice expeditions we will accompany the group for as long as we feel is necessary before letting them off on their own. This is usually a stepped process, moving from accompanying, to shadowing, to more remote methods of supervision.

When remotely supervising a group our staff will work out a daily supervision plan. They will look at the route and identify when they will need to be very close to the team and when they can hang back. Generally speaking we stay close when the team are in: a) remote areas; b) areas of potential physical danger; and c) areas of complex navigation. We will not necessarily walk with the group, they may not even see us, but they will be being supervised.

Client Testimonials

I have taken on the role of DofE lead in a new school and working with Lupine has made the transition into the new role so easy. All the leaders were so knowledgeable and supportive of every student in the group. They genuinely cared about the success of their groups and even bought them treats to encourage them when they were tired [on a practice expedition]. Their level of professionalism means that problems are managed efficiently and quickly. The expeditions have been seamless and fun and I can’t wait to work with them again in the future.”

Many thanks Rob and Tim. We all felt in very safe hands and our students have had an excellent experience and are very well prepared for their assessed in July. A great success. Thank you, see you in Snowdonia Rob! 😀

Since Lupine took over the whole Bronze expedition programme of nearly 100 participants we have noticed a marked improvement in the skills and ability of those who go on to do the Silver expeditions that we still run at the School.

I feel that every pupil at all levels of DofE gained enormously from the training they received from the Lupine staff be it improved map skills and navigation, a better understanding of the nature around them, camp craft skills, as well as the soft skill of teamwork and leadership. I observed how quickly the Lupine staff ascertain the level of the participants experience and skills and then develop them on from there. On every trip the welfare of the participants has always been the top priority and an ethos of how to support the participants to be able to help themselves, leads to excellent outcomes. The level of support that I received from the office in consistently high. I can chat through my requirements, be it a trip run by Lupine entirely or having lupine staff on a trip to support us.

They are amazing. Our school has used them for the Gold expedition for the past three years. With their non-profit making ethos I feel they are true to the old idea of DofE being staffed by volunteers, but with a completely professional level of qualifications and expertise.

The resources which they make freely available for sharing are fantastic. At a time when I worry that DofE is getting too corporate and concerned with branding/selling merchandise Lupine are a breath of fresh air.

I’m impressed! That’s the best risk summary I’ve ever seen for [my daughter]. Thank You

Hey Lupine!
Julia and Sascha here, two students who just got back from their Gold assessed exped in the Yorkshire Dales last night. We just wanted to communicate just how AMAZING this expedition was, and genuinely how amazing our mountain leaders were. Our group had Rob, and the other had Steven (stephen?), and they genuinely made our experience what it was. Rob was so so supportive and helpful and kind, gave us so many trips and tricks and genuinely made it the best expedition we had ever been on. Of course the routes were incredible, and the landscape was amazing, so thanks to all of you at Lupine for that!
We hope this can be communicated to the two of them that the 10 of us are genuinely so grateful, and speaking on the behalf of everyone else had some of the best days of our lives.
Thank you for the experience!
Sascha and Julia 🙂

“Your team are incredible! So professional so switched on. I am so grateful to have them here our students are so lucky! Trevor is a rock!”
