DofE: Important update to course notes and 2 new resources
Welcome to our January 2014 update. We have made an important change to the course notes document, added a couple of new resources and are requesting help in promoting new and existing products and services.
Important Update to the Course Notes and Lesson Plans
We have updated the Trangia use page in the course notes document to bring it in line with the latest best practice. Current thinking on best practice for the filling of liquid stoves is to have a fuel dump away from the cooking area and then have a completely separate re-fuelling area. We have changed the wording and images of this page to reflect that refueling must take place away from the cooking area. We made this change to the document on 26th December so if you downloaded prior to this then please update your copy. We have also updated the lesson plans accordingly.
The course notes document can be downloaded from the following link. It is item 1 in the list. The lesson plans are number 2 on the list.
Make a Menu Demonstration Cards
We had a couple of requests last year for BIG make a menu cards. We have enlarged the cards to A5 size (produced 2 up on an A4 sheet). These are for demonstrating what to do with the cards in front of a class.
The new Make a Menu demonstration cards are item 5 on the list on the downloads page. http://lupineadventure.co.uk/downloads/dofe-downloads.html
A5 Taking a Bearing and Relocation Strategies
A teacher from Leeds who I met a few years ago got in touch to request an A5 sheet that could be laminated and given to participants to remind them how to take a bearing and how to relocate should they need to. This download is number 7 on the list of downloads. http://lupineadventure.co.uk/downloads/dofe-downloads.html
Help with promoting other new and existing services
We have well over 1000 teachers and youth workers on this list and are very careful to keep the mailings to a minimum (usually only 3 or 4 a year). However, we intend to send 2 more e-mails in the next few days and would appreciate your help in getting them to the people who may find them useful. This is mainly intended for those of you who work in schools.
The first e-mail is intended for heads of Physical Education in your school. Lupine Adventure Co-op have been selected by Mountain Training to deliver their two new courses, Hill Skills and Mountain Skills. We are hoping to provide these courses to groups of students studying Physical Education. They are two day residential courses aimed at the beginner hill and mountain walkers. Mountain Training are the National Governing Body (NGB) of Mountain Leading and Instructing and while participants have to be 18 before they can start their Mountain Leader qualification participants can register for these courses from the age of 14.
The second e-mail is intended for heads of year 11 and 6th forms. It will basically be advertising two things.
- The activities we offer that could be used for enrichment weeks
- It will also make the suggestion of an annual Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge event for year 11 and/or 6th form students to raise funds for your school's favourite charity.
If you could pass these e-mails on to the relevant people in your school then it would be appreciated. If you don't work in a school just delete them. Please note that there will be no unsubscribe link on these two e-mails. This is to avoid the possibility of the person receiving it accidentally unsubscribing you from this list.
Get in touch and help with your groups
E-mail us if you have any resources that you would be willing to share on our website, have any feedback on any of the resources provided or if you need any help delivering any aspect of the DofE expedition. We can come to you to deliver training or can train groups in a residential setting. We can look after entire expeditions or just send a single Mountain Leader to help your staff supervise.
We also run open expeditions for individuals. If someone has had to drop out of your expedition for whatever reason, get in touch and we'll see if we can accommodate them on one of ours.
