Glen Coe and the surrounding area is breathtaking, it is often considered one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland, and is a part of the designated National Scenic Area of Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. The Glen is famous for both it’s beauty and infamous for its history, namely the massacre of 1692 which occurred as part of the government’s efforts to suppress the Highlands and its troublesome residents.

What we'll get up to.

Ben Nevis

Well, obviously, for those who want to, there is the option to climb Ben Nevis. We can either go up the usual zig zags on the east side of the mountain, or, alternatively go round the back to take in the spectacular Carn Mor Dearg Arete. To be honest as there will be two Mountain Leaders on the trip we can do both and meet on the top (but the arete group will have to get going fairly early if this were to happen)

Hidden Valley

Glen Coe contains the Hidden valley. Until the mid 1700's this valley was used to hide The McDonalds clan's stolen cattle (the McDonalds were notorious cattle thieves, this is one of the reasons given for the bitter rivalry between them and the Campbell's that made the Massacre possible). We can take a walk up the valley, to the cattle grazing plateau attain the ridge at the head and walk back down to our accommodation.

Buachaille Etive Mor

Buachaille Etive Mor is a ridge containing 4 peaks. The most famous being Stob Dearg. Stob Dearg is the classically shaped mountain at the extreme east of the Glen Coe valley. The going will be very slow for the first 2 kilometres as we attain the ridge, after which the walking gets easier and the views get better. We'll take in the other 3 peaks, Stob na Dorie, Stob Corie Altruim and Stob Na Broig before making our way back down to the Lairig Gartain where our vehicles will be waiting to take us back to the cottage in time for tea and medals.

Other options

Other options on this holiday include a wide range of coastal and loch based walks, Glen Nevis and Ranoch moor to name a few easier grade days and for those wishing for a very hard grade walk there is always the Aonach Eager.
