In a nutshell, we can provide the complete program for the expedition part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Silver and Gold level. The expedition part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award comprises of three elements.
- Training
- Practice Expedition
- Assessed Expedition
We can run, or help you run, just the training or we can put together a program to run all three elements. Our standard programs have been designed to meet all the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Expedition.

We can run a full training course or simply cover the bits that you require help with.
We can train your teams in short blocks at regular intervals (possibly throughout the winter months) or run an intensive weekend of training away in the countryside. We provide training for expeditions on the following areas:
- Route planning.
- Navigation.
- First aid.
- Emergency procedures.
- Danger identification and avoidance.
- Menu planning.
- Camp-craft.
- Camp cooking and hygiene.
- The country code and highway code.
- Equipment choice and procurement.
- Deciding what to take and how to carry it all.
Due to the remote supervision involved in the expeditions we can only undertake them if we have been involved in the training of the participants. We cannot allow teams, whose abilities we do not have first hand knowledge of, to walk un-supervised. While you may have conducted some training yourselves we would have to be satisfied that the participants were ready to undertake the practice or assessed expeditions before we could be asked to run them. This can be assessed during a single days walk. During this walk participants will have to demonstrate their abilities in a number of areas including navigation and emergency procedures as well as cooking and camping skills.
Once we are happy that all the teams are competent we can either work alone or in conjunction with your staff and volunteers to safely supervise the groups to the level that each group requires. If you are providing your own qualified staff (a Mountain Leader for example) we cannot count them as such until we have checked their credentials and witnessed them at work first hand. By the same measure, we will not simply hire Mountain Leaders and youth workers as is required, but will draw from a pool of experienced staff who are well known to us.
When on expedition we will supervise the group by identifying and covering areas of potential physical danger and complex navigation. We will not necessarily walk with the group (especially on the assessed expedition), they may not even see us, but rest assured they will be being supervised. We will meet up and chat to each group at least once per day during their walk and once on the camp site at the end of each day to perform an assessment of their well-being.
If you would like us to come to your school or youth group to run a session on tips and tricks for teaching the syllabus required for expedition then this can be arranged.
This training is unaccredited and is in no way a substitute for mountain leader, walking group leader or bela qualifications. It is simply a way for you to brush up on your skills and draw on our experience of teaching a large number of individuals of different ages and abilities.
